Whippets FC, the burgeoning women's grassroots football team, has unveiled its unique home kit for 2024, courtesy of Umbro and concocted by London-based designer and Whippets player, Sophie Hird. As the grassroots scene for women footballers heightens its footprint, it's becoming a vibrant canvas for skilled creatives to display their prowess, mirroring the enthusiasm that followed the Victoria Park Vixens kits by Kappa. Now it's Whippets FC's turn to strut an artistic wonder on the famous pitches of Hackney Marshes.
The team, known as much for their creativity off the pitch as on, has taken teamwork to a whole new level. The kit was brilliantly designed by Whippets' multi-talented Sophie Hird. Previously celebrated for her innovative upcycling of football jerseys, Ms Hird has now poured her remarkable gifts into crafting an entirely new aesthetic for her squad. The kit features a bold black base adorned with striking neon pinstripes, and places the team's crest and Umbro’s Double Diamond emblem front and centre beneath a collar radiating vintage chic.
Hird spoke fondly of her inspiration, “The inspiration for the jersey design was led by looking through football kit archives from the 80s and 90s. I love how loud some of the retro jerseys are in terms of colour and print, so really wanted to play with this yet maintain a wearable element.
